At the heart of an integrated CASE system is the repository, which stores the meanings of diagrams and their explanatory text. The repository steadily accumulates information related to the planning, analysis, design, construction, and maintenance of systems. Vendors have generally defined their own repositories.
The repository is essential to the rapid development life cycle. Early in the life cycle, information already in the repository is extracted for use. Information developed during planning is stored in the repository for later use in design. Similarly, information produced during design is stored for use in construction. The information that will drive the code generator is steadily collected. The repository also stores reusable templates, structures, models, and designs, which are critical to fast development. These can be retrieved and modified to meet the needs of new applications.
