Relationships Among Diagrams

A system is generally too complex to represent with just one type of diagram. With a computer, however, many different representations can be created and linked together logically. Thus, a diagram created on a computer with a CASE tool can be very different from one drawn on paper.

Using a CASE tool, a system's components may be summarized in a decomposition diagram and their relationships expressed in dependency diagrams. The detailed logic may be depicted in an action diagram, which may also refer to screen designs or report designs. Relationships among the data items used by the system may be modeled in an entity relationship diagram. The entity relationship diagram can be used to create a database structure, from which individual views of data may be derived. With an integrated CASE toolset, developers have the facilities to build, explore, and store such multiple diagrams and to enforce consistency among them.
