A principle of using CASE tools is that diagrams are employed whenever possible as an aid to clear thinking and as a means of communication, both among people and between people and computers. To facilitate learning and communication, a CASE tool should use clear, simple diagram types with the minimum number of different icons, and the meanings of the icons should be as obvious as possible. The diagrams must be complete and rigorous enough to serve as a basis for code generation and for automatic conversion of one type of diagram into another.
