A principle of using CASE tools is that diagrams are employed whenever possible as an aid to clear thinking. Systems analysts interact with CASE tools by means of diagrams. Diagrams are used to represent planning information, overviews of systems, data models, process models, detailed designs, and program structures.
A critical characteristic of an integrated CASE tool is that it generates executable programs. The tight integration of analysis and design tools with a code generator allows much higher productivity than would be possible if the tools were not coupled.
