A good workshop leader can neutralize the harmful effects of politics, power struggles, and communication gaps. The leader must place IT staff and end users on an equal footing and establish them as partners. The leader must act as a referee at times, mediating debates. The quieter members of the workshop must be encouraged to participate and ask questions, while domineering participants must be prevented from overpowering the meeting. Above all, the workshop leader must be impartial.
A good workshop leader is aware of the goals that must be reached within a given time-frame and uses facilitation techniques that move the session forward toward those goals. Such techniques should allow workshop groups to discuss ideas fully and reach agreement without too much delay.
