Application Development Methodology

Rapid Application Development (RAD)

Introduction

The success of rapid development depends on the involvement of people with the right skills and talents. These people must be carefully selected, highly trained, and highly motivated. In particular, the Sponsor, User Design Team, and SWAT Team (Construction Team) are vital to the success of the development.

Each stage of a rapid development project includes activities that need to move fast, and the people who must make this happen should be highly motivated. At the start, it is critical that management, including the Sponsor, initiate the project quickly, cutting through any political delays or bureaucracy. At the Requirements Planning and User Design stages, key end users must be available to participate in workshops. While the system is being constructed, the Construction Team, which uses the CASE toolset to accomplish detailed design and code generation, must be geared to move fast. At the end of the development cycle, the Cutover Team, which handles training and cutover, must also be ready to move quickly.

Excellent tools are essential to fast application development, but they do not by themselves guarantee success. Fast development relies equally heavily on the people involved, who must be carefully selected, highly trained and highly motivated. They must be able to use the tools and to work together in close-knit teams. In particular, certain critical players must know their roles and perform them well.

Rapid development usually allows each person involved to play several different roles, so a rapid development project does not necessarily require a large number of people.
