A development team needs an environment that encourages its members to work hard during the period of fast development and that makes work as enjoyable as possible. The team's work rooms should be private and pleasant, and should be accessible at all times to encourage those who work extra hours before and after regular office hours. Team members need plenty of desk space and a white board for discussion sessions. Every developer should have a computer with an integrated CASE toolset. Workstations should have enough chairs so that two or more people can sit and discuss what is on the screen. Printing and copying should be quick and easy.
Above all, fast development requires freedom from interruptions. Team members should not be bothered by unnecessary visitors or by meetings other dm those that are part of the development project. The telephone should be silenced through the use of an answering machine, a facsimile machine, and electronic mail.
It has been demonstrated repeatedly that a good work environment more than pays for itself in increased productivity.
