Activity A4.8.6

Plan for technical design and construction

Planning for technical design and construction is essentially the assembly and publishing of material created in the earlier tasks, with the addition of preliminary project plans. Follow a standard planning procedure. Steps are:

- Review the standard tasks -

Take note of any new or unique tasks that have to be built into the plan, and then create a planning chart. Standard tasks include:

* Physical database design

* Conversation and transaction dialog design

* Message size and interaction frequency design

* Computer resource requirements design for each interaction

* Screen layout timing and frequency design

* Report layout timing and frequency design

- Estimate design resources -

Take account of the software to be used and the skills of your available staff, as well as of application details.

- Estimate technical design time scales -

These will depend upon the estimates of design resources and on the availability of the appropriate people.

- Describe risks -

Take actions to control risks and amend the plan if necessary.

4. Overview of Technical Design (TD) Phase

Purpose of Technical Design Phase

A technical design project prepares an implementation area for construction and installation. The key tasks are therefore structured to produce a system and database that meet the user's acceptance criteria and that are also technically sound.

Objectives of Technical Design Phase

A technical design (TD) project aims to define efficient system and database structures for an implementation area. It is based on the design of a business system developed by a business system design (BSD) phase project.

The objectives of the technical design stage are to:

* Specify the data storage to support installation of the system

* Define the data structures to be used

* Define the programs, modules and computing facilities involved

* Assure that the physical data structures and computer program structures are supported by the hardware system

* Assure that the system performance meets or exceeds specification to establish all construction and implementation requirements

Technical Design Phase Task Dependency Diagram

Tasks:

There are eleven tasks conducted during the technical design (TD) stage, each comprised of a set of subtasks. The tasks of TD include the following:

* Specify the technical objectives for the implementation area

* Specify the technical context, standards and requirements of the system

* Specify the hardware and software components

* Define the preliminary data structure into an implementable database design

* Refine and design procedures into modules and programs

* Define the implementation interfaces, procedures and user training required

* Design the operating support for security and integrity control, and performance monitoring

* Check that the system will meet performance objectives

* Specify integration, system and acceptance tests

* Define what is to be done in the construction and implementation projects and obtains management acceptance of the plans
